A book recommendation

I think the most remarkable book that I have ever read was and is the Tower of Babel.

To give readers an idea, it is asserted in this book that since the onset of some method of identifying languages, there have been about 15,000 languages - of which only 5000 remain in use.

As a result, it causes the reader to wonder why there have been so many entirely separate languages.

I recommend people get this book. It's by George Steiner.

George was a Cambridge linguistics professor, and I don't know why this book is not more generally known.
