HMRC is having a larf

About a couple of years ago HMRC tried to make handling of any tax matter digital. This move failed. And reasonable people would have assumed that a period of quiet would follow. But, no, HMRC are at it again and expect that taxpayers will make six returns or interactions with HMRC every year (repeat: EVERY year) from April 2026. This is because a quarterly return is expected of every self-employed individual, followed by a review of the outcome and then a statement of settlement of matters. This will cause taxpayers to spend a lot of money on accountants and their fees and to set aside time to think about mere compliance rather than the business in hand. I think this is all very unlikely to prove acceptable. We'll see: the fact is that we are governed so badly that absolutely anything can happen.
